Good Counsel destroys DeMatha; wins WCAC title

So, Good Counsel beat DeMatha in the WCAC championship game Sunday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Not a shocker. But 42-3. You’ve got to be kidding.

Nope, no joke. The Falcons spotted the Stags a first-quarter field goal that opened the scoring, then ran off six unanswered touchdowns, all of which were from 13 yards out or longer (some much longer), to win easily in an unanticipated blowout.

Swarmin’ Hornets still perfect, advance to state semis

Damascus head coach Eric Wallich keeps calling this a special season for his Swarmin’ Hornets. And, each week it keeps getting a little more so.

Friday night in the 3A West Region final against Quince Orchard before another overflow, standing-room-only crowd at The Hive, Damascus (12-0 record) kept the special season special, taking down the Cougars, 33-14, to advance to this weekend’s Class 3A state semifinals, where they’ll host Howard County’s Wilde Lake (9-3 record), the 3A East Region cham, Friday at 7 p.m.

Gaithersburg handles Whitman in playoff opener

From almost the opening kickoff at John Harvill Field in Gaithersburg of last Friday’s Class 4A West Region semifinal, Gaithersburg dominated visiting Whitman. There’s no other way to describe it.

From the early-first-quarter-58-yard touchdown pass from Zack Fetters to Simba Gwashavamhu to the four forced turnovers to the scintillating defensive effort to the final score, 28-0, it was all Trojans, all the time.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yep, in response to Jim Mora’s all-time great rant (you know you’ve heard it at least 10,000 times: “Ah – Playoffs? Don’t talk about — playoffs?! You kidding me?! Playoffs?!”), we are talking about playoffs, and, no, we ain’t kidding.

Two things no one will be able to say about the 2010 Damascus Swarmin’ Hornets is they couldn’t get it done in clutch or that they couldn’t win the big games (at least in the regular season).
