Our friend at the Gazette John Wehmueller came up with the perfect title on this game. Running Men.
If you go to this game it will take all of 60 minutes to find the winner. Expect both teams to run all night long and let the clock run. Especially with Quaterback Eric Freniere out for this one. VOLi was at the Paint Branch vs Springbrook game this past week and we witnessed Eric go down just before half with what we think was a serious knee injury.
You can expect to hear the PA announcer call out names like Britt, Pestano and Pollard all night rushing the ball.
We spoke with Pollard just after the Paint Branch game and I asked Pollard what he thought about taking Sherwood on without your number one QB: Pollard said ” the game next week will be all about defense.”
Sherwood has been very tough all year on defense and Springbrook shut out Paint Branch this past weekend. Anything can happen in this one…

It may not be the powerhouse game that you will get when QO takes on Sherwood this coming Friday night, but there is so much going on this coming Friday night at Paint Branch. First of all its a rivalry. Second there are some playoff implications, if Springbrook wins they get in. Paint Branch is already in the post season after a strong season. Then finally its the last game at the Paint Branch field until 2013. The plan is to build the new Paint Branch school on the athletic fields and after the building is complete, then they will rebuild the athletic fields where the school is currently. That is much like the construction that happened at Richard Montgomery.
Paint Branch will be playing on the road until 2013 so this last Football game has a lot of meaning. Paint Branch will definitely want to beat Springbrook for their last game and end Springbrooks season at the same time.
The VOLiSports broadcast team will be there and we will have LIVE scoring and post game highlights.
The first game VOLiSports will be covering this year will be Blake at Springbrook. The Consortium Rivalry will put two very good teams up against each other for Week 1. A great test for both teams in a meaningful game right off the bat. Two players to lookout for will be Kwabena Asante (Blake) and Mitchell Pollard (Springbrook).
The game highlights will be posted to VOLiSports after the game.
The game can be seen on MCPS Cable channel on your cable network.
( On MCPS – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 7:30pm)
The game will also play on Verizon FiOS 1 – Date and Time (To Be Announced).
The full schedule of games is coming soon… Keep checking out site for your team…
It’s been 41 years since a Maryland Boys 4A school has won back-to-back basketball championships. But the streak finally ended at Comcast Center on Saturday night as Springbrook won their 36th game in a row to capture their second consecutive Maryland State Championship with a 73-61 win over Henry A. Wise High School.
The win gives the undefeated Blue Devils, 27-0, the first consecutive State titles since Northwestern stopped Richard Montgomery from winning two in a row in 1967 and then captured the 1968 championship. Springbrook is now 52-2 in the last two seasons. They haven’t lost since 2/14/08 when Gaithersburg beat them 57-56.
The Blue Devils, not known for their free thrown shooting, connected on 30 of 37 attempts in the second half, including10 in a row in the fourth period, to pull away from the Prince George’s County school who was making their first appearance in the State Tournament.
Wise led by five at the end of the first period after connecting on two consecutive three-point shots to close the quarter, 12-7. But from that point on, it was all Springbrook.
The Blue Devils scored 20 points in the second period to lead at the half 27-24.
Wise stayed close, pulling to within one at 44-43 early in the final period. But then Springbrook started to pull away with it’s great ball handling and accurate shooting from the line.
Springbrook Players after the Game
Jamal Olasewere was eight for nine from the floor, scoring 21 points, and grabbing 15 rebounds to lead both teams in both categories.
But it was the ball handling of Chris Carter that proved to make the difference as Springbrook pulled away in the final period, building its lead to as much as 13. Carter frequently brought the ball down court and patiently paced the Blue Devil offense finding Olasewere, Brandon Davis A(12 points) or Kwambina Coker (8 points on 4-5 shooting) down low or Jeremy Williams (17 points) on the wing.
And if they didn’t make a shot, Wise usually sent them to the free-throw line. Williams nailed 9 of 10 free throws and Davis made 10-14. Carter was also hot from the charity stripe making 6 of 6.
Springbrook scored 32 points in the final period, outscoring Wise by nine points.
THE NUMBERS ON THE BLUE DEVILS
Springbrook is certainly the most dominant team in the State the last four years. The numbers:
CONGRATS TO TOM CROWEL
Tom Crowel has a pretty good streak going for himself, too. Since he took over at Springbrook, the Blue Devils have gone: 18-6, 19-4, 25-2 and 27-0.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY DOMINATES MARYLAND 4A
This is the fourth consecutive Maryland State 4A championship for Montgomery County. Whitman captured the title in 2006 to start the current streak. Sherwood defeated Magruder in 2007 and Springbrook won the last two.
The Blue Devils win also assured the Montgomery County wouldn’t get shut out this year. Seneca Valley lost in the Semi-Finals to eventual 3A Champion Lake Clifton (also 27-0). The County was shut out as Blake (4A) and Paint Branch (3A) lost their State Championship games.
